Once in motion, one really wonders why the devil spend more? The saturated traffic and the very strict speed limits make this motorization amply sufficient. Powerful from the lowest speeds, this engine allows very convincing occasions. And with the DSG box, the combination is almost perfect. Almost ? Yes, because the engine remains a bit high at high speeds and the box lacks finesse and softness at startup.

Clear behind the ears

Question behavior road, we should not expect any surprises. Arteon exhibits healthy and effective behavior in all circumstances. Tried in dry weather (yes, in Belgium!) And with big "gommards", the beautiful Teutonic never lacked motor skills. Comfort issue, the Arteon is doing well too, especially with the standard adaptive suspension on the two highest finishes. Do not try the devil by opting for the 20-inch rims, strikingly disturbing in the big ruts of our charming road network.

For which budget?

VW offers Arteon from € 34,990 in gasoline (1.5 TSI) or from € 37,720 in diesel (2.0 TDI BM). The Elegance version is displayed from 40.070 € with this 2.0 TDI 150, while the R-Line claims 40,820 €. These fares are significantly lower than those of a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé or Audi A5 Sportback, the two main rivals, albeit more compact jigs.

At the pump, our engine only required 6.5 l / 100 km. A very good result, but we will admit that given the use (mainly highway legal), we expected a little better. Lack of break-in? Tires too wide? CO2 emissions are announced from 110 g / km for this 2.0 TDI 150.


With this model, VW will inevitably seek the premium market, even cannibalize a little in-house customer of the A5 Sportback. This clientele will find in Arteon a car also well designed, but more spacious, better equipped and especially cheaper. The Arteon is a success, partly for its design part that seems to please the greatest number, but also for its technical part which takes what VW knows how to do better.

Let's recap: Hyundai is full of ambition. This year, in addition to the i30 Wagon, Fastback and their new SUV, the Kona, the brand also presents for the first time in its history, a "hot hatch". A real bomb because no one but BMW M's former boss, Albert Biermann, has developed this i30 N.


It is therefore not a preparation to hurry, where the car is decked with explicit stickers, a kit of lowered suspensions and more sporty rims. No, this model is the first in the N department that designs cars in Namyang, Korea, and then settle on the German circuit Nürburgring. Either, twice N.

Two versions

Treatment N begins under the hood. We find the 2.0 T-GDI 4-cylinder, which is here offered in two power variants: 250 or 275 horsepower, a power each time reached 6,000 rpm. Both versions develop exactly the same torque: 353 Nm, or even 378 Nm with overboost. This value is available between 1,450 and 4,000 rpm for the 250 horsepower version and up to 4,700 rpm for the 275 horsepower model. Numbers ? From 0 to 100 km / h in respectively 6.4 and 6.1 seconds and a top speed limited to 250 km / h.

Performance Pack

Power is delivered to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. On the 275 horsepower version, an electronic differential helps traction. This model is also offered with the "Performance Pack" which includes large wheels (19 inches against 18 inches) with wider tires for more grip and sharpness, and a sport exhaust for more sensations.


The suspensions of the 250 hp version lower the body of 4 mm, against 8 mm for the 275 hp version. The N department engineers have done their utmost to keep this body under control: it has been stiffened in many ways and the "Performance Pack" still receives additional reinforcement in the trunk. Electronically controlled damping and larger brakes and optimized cooling complete the chassis part.

In search of the limits

For this first grip, Hyundai had booked for us the circuit of Zolder, so that we can approach the limits of the car safely. The first thing that surprises: the various controls are finally calibrated as they should be. The engineers from the N department managed to eliminate the somewhat vague feeling of the direction of the standard i30 and exchanged it for more precision and consistency. The box has also been reinforced and sees its long deflections exchanged for short and dry movements, which, with the heavier clutch pedal, creates a sportier atmosphere.

All of this results in a very precise i30 N, with the sharp front end and the rear end always following cleanly. The self-locking differential pulls the nose towards the rope of the turn, which allows to put very quickly the gases. If you brake very hard, the Hyundai remains stable. The rear end never becomes light or nervous: the whole is always controlled. Adhesion losses are also controlled, even if to get there, you have to cause this i30 N. The laps on the Nürburgring have paid off ...

On the public road

For the road, Hyundai offers five different driving modes, from "Eco" to "Normal", through "Sport" and "N", as well as a customizable mode "N Custom". All affect throttle response, damping, steering consistency and ESP. On the versions with the "Performance Pack", this also influences the differential lock and sports exhaust. Good to know: a button "rev" on the steering wheel gives a little gas between reports, downshift. But of course you do not have to always roll the knife between your teeth: on the "Eco" and "Normal" modes, the i30 N can be driven like any other classic i30, even if the damping could have been more tolerant.


In the cockpit, those who are familiar with the i30 will be here in known terrain. The differences are limited to a sports steering wheel with two big buttons for driving modes, a big shift knob and excellent seats. If you prefer a discreet dress, know that this i30 N does not do too much on the outside: red inserts on the lip of the front spoiler and the rear diffuser, a roof spoiler with a triangular brake light, a double Exhaust and some logos N. Oh yes, there are also specific rims and brake calipers painted red.

Admittedly, the basic price in diesel of 45.980 €, or even 49.610 € for this version 220 d appears strong. But the standard staffing is more generous today than yesterday and helps to pass the pill. Be aware, however, that an E-Class really savored only when it is richly equipped and therefore reveals the extent of its potential. But the bill flies away quickly. At the pump, this new block is indeed a beautiful frugality. Our average consumption of 5.6 l / 100 km is the proof. Mainly highway routes can bring this value down by a few tenths, while a more sporting and / or urban use will not increase the budget exponentially.


Despite a more sporty style, the recipe of the model does not change: technological content at the top and a priority given to driving comfort. That the Touareg shares its structures with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7 is not new. That's what the 2002 model was already doing. However, the best place in the new Touareg is at the front: not only the finish is of high quality and the most beautiful effect (even to concede some exclusives to Audi) but you can especially experience it with the impressive Innovision cockpit. In fact, the two large digital screens merge to form one. Inspired by the quality that VW had spotted at Mercedes, the Touareg's screen almost reaches the size of a tablet that can be found at Tesla. This 15-inch touchscreen is dedicated to comfort elements such as air conditioning, massage seats (a first on the Touareg), driving assistance and infotainment system. The screen on the left serves as a dashboard and is 12 inches.

The set can be customized under seven usage profiles. According to Volkswagen, it only takes twenty minutes to understand how it works. If you are lost in one of the sub-menus, a large "home" button will allow you to return to the original screen. We find that the dashboard system is consistent even though we preferred to see the functions of the airco directly accessible; nevertheless, we recognize the intuitiveness of the commands.

Different engines

For its launch, the Touareg is limited to the 3.0 V6 TDI developing 286 hp and 600 Nm of torque, which will soon be strengthened by a version of 231 hp and 500 Nm. Is also expected, a V6 TSI 340 hp with 450 Nm of torque and a V8 TDI of 421 hp developing not less than 900 Nm. In China, the Touareg will begin its career with a rechargeable 367 hp hybrid that will arrive on the Old Continent in a future still undetermined.

If you go through the list of options, you will be interested in driving aids ranging from night vision to help with maneuvers with trailers (the Touareg can tow up to 3.5 tons), which makes driving comfortable and relaxed.

On highways and in traffic jams, the Touareg can drive in partially autonomous driving. Lane maintenance assistance also detects markings of temporary road works.
